Anahuacalmecac International University Preparatory of North America

About the School: Based in El Sereno, Anahuacalmecac International University Preparatory of North America is Los Angeles County’s only and oldest autonomous Indigenous Peoples K-12 public community-based school. Anahuacalmecac is dedicated to student academic excellence, Native wisdom, and appreciation of the cultural and intellectual heritage of Indigenous Peoples and the promotion of positive social awareness. The school consciously strives to provide students effective and comprehensive pedagogy through a globally inclusive curriculum within a positive supportive learning environment involving students, teachers, parents, and staff. Visit their website for more info!

Our Partnership: The Audubon Center at Debs Park has worked with Anahuacalmecac on a number of projects and events surrounding advocacy, youth leadership, habitat restoration, and more. In 2019, the Center traveled with 20+ students and staff from Anahuacalmecac to Sacramento for the Audubon California Advocacy Day, where the students were able to meet with our local representatives and speak on issues relevant to their school and community. Students from Anahuacalmecac also participated in the Audubon Youth Leaders Plants for Birds Summer Internship Program, where they learned the basics of habitat restoration and bird conservation. Our most recent project involves revitalizing and restoring the Native American Terrace Garden, located in the El Sereno side of Debs Park.
